How to clean a mattress (and keep dust mites down) in one afternoon

By the Women's Reality editors · Published 24 October 2026

You can't put a mattress in the washing machine, but you can clean it properly – and the guidance on dust mites tells you which steps actually matter.

The numbers that matter

Dust mites live in bedding and mattresses and are a common allergy trigger. Mayo Clinic's guidance gives a few precise thresholds:

MeasureGuidance
Washing beddingEvery week, in water of at least 130 °F (54.4 °C)
If bedding can't be washed hotTumble dry for at least 15 minutes above 130 °F
Indoor humidityKeep relative humidity below 50%
Non-washable itemsFreezing for 24 hours kills mites, but does not remove allergens
Mattress and pillowsAllergen-proof (zippered) covers stop mites from colonising them

Step by step

  1. Strip everything – sheets, pillowcases, mattress protector – and wash it all as hot as the care labels allow, ideally at 130 °F or more.
  2. Vacuum the mattress slowly with the upholstery tool, including seams and sides. This lifts surface dust and debris; on its own, vacuuming is not effective at removing most dust mites, which is why the hot wash and the covers matter more.
  3. Treat stains with as little liquid as possible. Blot (don't rub) with cool water and a small amount of mild detergent or an enzyme cleaner for organic stains. Too much water soaks into the foam and is slow to dry.
  4. Deodorise. A thin layer of baking soda left for a few hours, then vacuumed off, absorbs odours.
  5. Dry completely. Open windows or run a fan; never put bedding back on a damp mattress.
  6. Add a protector or allergen-proof cover before making the bed again. It is the step that keeps the next clean easy.
  7. Rotate the mattress head to foot (and flip it, if the manufacturer allows) to even out wear.

A simple schedule

  • Weekly: wash sheets and pillowcases hot.
  • Monthly: wash the mattress protector; vacuum the mattress.
  • Every few months: the full routine above, plus rotation.
